Food Stockpiling

I’m ashamed to say that I’ve never thought much about stockpiling food. We have always been a “buy only what we will use for the week” type of family. But now it just makes sense to start stockpiling food.

What if there is suddenly a food shortage? I remember just last year going to the Nellis Air Force Base Commissary and being unable to purchase more than one bag of rice because of some strange rice shortage. At the time I didn’t think much about it.

Crop failures are happening around the world. It is just a matter of time before it creeps up on the United States. Millions face this issue everyday. In addition to crop failures there is the higher price of food to consider. The cost of food is going up every month! What used to cost $1.35 a pound today could very easily turn into $3.35 a pound next year.

It is my goal to have a complete stockpile of food by June 1, 2012. I want to have enough to feed my family of four (plus the six cats) for at least a year. That is a lot of food to store, and I need to get cracking. I need to figure out the best foods to store, how much food we will need, and the overall cost of storing a years supply of food.
